Terri’s Haiku for Thomas

1.

1/31/18

Bells and ringing bowls

A musician's treasured tools

Silence--he is gone.

(In our home, Thomas’ collection of bells, chimes and ringing things.)

2.

3/8/18

made him sad to throw

out old girlfriend's TV, “So

keep it then,” I say. Relief!

(Be kind to your new man, mixed sentiments. Understandable. 1986,

the year we met.)

3.

2/19/18

over there we'll meet

grow together again, sweet

love lives does not die

(Mary Baker Eddy, Miscellaneous Writings, pg. 42, "After the change called death.”)

4.

2/20/18

in Moroccan hills

distracted, I'm babbling

Thomas: "Be Here Now!”

(Not just on music stage, but always Thomas practiced 'presence.’)

5.

2/20/18

at Russian Fort beach,

crackling water sound, music

Thomas scoops up nuts

(black kukui nuts rustling in waves on a Kauai beach, once back home Thomas

drilled holes & made a shaker: "a beautiful waterlike sound.” 1986.)

6.

3/3/18

best play night in Davis

short-lived high for Thomas

car keys lost, f**ked him up

(“In Davis, CA., 1992, Thomas’ Trio was on the same floor as the audience: kinectic, energy fantastic.

He was so high from playing. Then packing up he could not find car keys and a beautiful evening

turned nightmarish. He did find, but was a mess. "The gods can be jealous of your happiness.” )

7.

3/8/18

when you go away

i'm alone, a musician’s

wife's unending lament.

(Terri, the wife. Thomas, the musician. circa 1988)
